Frequently asked questions

Is there scientific evidence for love languages?

A 2024 review by Impett, Park and Muise in Current Directions in Psychological Science examined three core assumptions — one primary language per person, five distinct categories, and matching predicting satisfaction — and found none of them well supported. The durable insight, that people differ in what registers as care, survives.

What is a bid for connection?

The Gottman Institute describes a bid as the fundamental unit of emotional communication: a small attempt to get attention, affirmation or affection. Partners can turn toward it, turn away from it, or turn against it.

What are the Four Horsemen?

Criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling, as described by The Gottman Institute. Contempt is described there as the single greatest predictor of divorce.

How often should couples have a check-in?

There is no research-backed correct frequency. Weekly works for many couples because it is often enough to catch things early and rare enough to keep. Twenty minutes, at a fixed time, is more sustainable than a longer conversation you keep postponing.

Is Nearvo therapy?

No. Nearvo is a habit and conversation app, not a treatment, and it is not a substitute for working with a licensed couples therapist. If your relationship is in crisis, or if there is any abuse, please speak to a professional.

Does both partners need to pay?

No. Nearvo is planned so that one partner subscribes and both unlock. Planned pricing is $49.99 a year, $9.99 a month, or $129.99 once.

Is Nearvo available yet?

Not yet. It is in development. The question sets and research summaries here are free and useful on their own.

Nearvo is not therapy. These pages describe published relationship research and offer conversation prompts. They are not a substitute for working with a licensed couples therapist, and nothing here is a treatment for a relationship in crisis.
