20 questions for when you feel disconnected

Updated September 4, 2026

The hard part is opening the conversation without it sounding like an accusation.

"We've drifted apart" lands as a verdict on the relationship, and the natural response is defence. These are written to open the same subject as curiosity rather than complaint — starting well away from the two of you, and moving closer.

Start further out than feels natural

  1. What's been on your mind lately that we haven't talked about?
  2. What's the best part of your week been?
  3. Is there anything you've been looking forward to?
  4. What's been harder than usual lately?
  5. Is there something you've wanted to tell me and haven't found the moment for?

Then move closer

  1. When did you last feel really close to me?
  2. What were we doing then?
  3. What have we stopped doing that you miss?
  4. Is there something I used to do that I don't anymore?
  5. What makes you feel most cared about — recently, not in general?
  6. Is there a time in the last month you wanted my attention and didn't get it?
  7. What do you think I've been preoccupied with?

Then the honest ones

  1. Do you feel like I know what's going on in your life right now?
  2. Is there something you've been managing on your own that you shouldn't have to?
  3. Have I been someone you want to come home to lately?
  4. What would you want more of from me?
  5. What would you want less of?
  6. Is there something we need to change, or do we just need more time together?
  7. What's one thing we could do this week?
  8. Is there anything you're worried I don't want to hear?

Why disconnection usually isn't dramatic

It's rarely one event. It's the accumulation of small moments that didn't get answered — the "look at this" that got a distracted noise, the story that got interrupted by a phone.

The Gottman Institute calls these bids for connection, and reports that couples who stayed together turned toward them 86% of the time against 33% for couples who later divorced. Which means reconnection is usually less about a grand gesture than about noticing the next twenty small ones. We wrote out 50 concrete examples, because bids are easy to understand and genuinely hard to spot.

Two notes on running this well

Don't do all twenty. Pick three or four. A list worked through methodically feels like an interview.

Let the answer to question 20 be difficult. If you ask whether there's something you don't want to hear and then react badly to the answer, you've taught your partner not to answer honestly next time. That question is only worth asking if you can sit with the reply.

Nearvo is not therapy. These pages describe published relationship research and offer conversation prompts. They are not a substitute for working with a licensed couples therapist, and nothing here is a treatment for a relationship in crisis.
